Liverpool have kicked off the defence of their Champions League title on a disappointing note, as they have lost 2-0 to Napoli away from home.
The Premier League club, who won the Champions League title last season by beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Madrid, went down 2-0 at Stadio San Paolo in Naples in Group E on Tuesday evening.
Following a goalless first half, Dries Merten put Napoli in the lead when he found the target from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, after Scotland international left-back Andrew Robertson had brought down Jose Callejon inside the Liverpool 18-yard box.
Then in the second minute of injury time, Liverpool and Netherlands international central defender Virgil van Dijk made an uncharacteristic mistake, allowing former Tottenham Hotspur striker Fernando Llorente to score the home team’s second and final goal of the evening.
Over the course of the 90 minutes at Stadio San Paolo in Naples on Wednesday evening, hosts Napoli had 48% of the possession, took 10 shots of which five were on target, and earned seven corners.
Visitors Liverpool had 52% of the possession, took 13 shots of which four were on target, and earned six corners.
Liverpool’s next game in the Champions League is against FC Salzburg at Anfield on October 2.
Salzburg also kicked off their 2019-20 Champions League campaign on Tuesday evening, getting the better of KRC Genk 6-2 at home.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will return to action on Sunday evening when they take on Chelsea away from home at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
