Following a dismal campaign by their lofty standards, Real Madrid have started the summer transfer market with a bang.
The Merengues finished 19 points behind arch-rivals FC Barcelona, eight behind city neighbors Atletico Madrid in La Liga and failed to make any impact in either the domestic cup competition, Copa del Rey or in Europe in the UEFA Champions League. These are results that are simply unacceptable with all and sundry concerned with the Bernabeau based club.
Los Blancos are not one to rest on their laurels, even in the best of times and with the season only being finished a couple of weeks ago, they have already begun putting the pieces together to make an impact next year. Having already re-hired manager Zinedine Zidane, they have gone out and splashed over 250m Euros on Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy Eder Militao and Rodrygo Goes. They are expected to make more moves before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
Belgium international Hazard has long since been linked with a move to the Spanish capital, and finally completed his move over the weekend. The 28-year old cost a cool 100 M Euros from Chelsea and given he had just one year left on his contract, it can be considered great business for all parties concerned. Jovic is arguably Europe’s best up and coming strikers, having had a fantastic spell at Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt, in particular last year, where the 21-year old Serbian racked up 27 goals in 43 matches.
Those two are considered players very much for the here and now, while the likes of Mendy, Militao and Goes are seen as long term future prospects of which Real Madrid can build their team around. Mendy and Militao are seen as long term replacements for an aging Merengues defense that includes the likes of Sergio Ramos and Marcelo, both well into their 30’s.
Tied into all of this, is a report in Madrid based newspaper Marca, that says the 13 time European champions will have to sell a number of players, not only to compensate for their business so far, but any further additions they will like to make. The likes of Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez, Keylor Navas, Mateo Kovacic, Dani Ceballos, Marcos Llorente etc…could all be out the door before the start of the 2019-2020 season.
