FC Barcelona slipped further down in La Liga title chase as they were held to a 2-2 draw at relegation battlers Recretivo de Huelva. This implies that the Catalan giants are now 6 points behind league leaders Real Madrid who play second from bottom Real Murcia on Sunday.
Barca did take the lead inside the first couple of minutes when Cameroonian international striker Samuel Eto’o scored but Recre equalised through a controversial Marco Ruben goal just before the break.
The Catalan giants then took the lead immediately after the breather was terminated when Eto’o scored his second of the match but Recre didn’t lose heart and Ruben scored once again to level the score at 2-2.
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard was of course bitterly disappointed with the result of the match and said this after the match:
“We began well but after they leveled up we lowered our guard. At 1-2 we were waiting for something more to win the match, but although we had chances and opportunities to kill the game, they continued to fight and were able to obtain the tie. It is a pity, because the team put in enough effort to achieve the victory.”
You wouldn’t get anything by rueing, Frank, but then again you cannot do anything now except regret and moan. More agony could be piled on Barca on Sunday as Villarreal could leapfrog them into second should they win against Almeria away from home and archrivals Real Madrid could extend their lead over Barca to 9 points by defeating Murica.
