Ukraine host Slovenia at the L’viv Arena in the first leg of their Euro 2016 play-off tie. The game kicks off at 18:00 CEST on Saturday, November 14, 2015 and promises to be an interesting clash.
Ukraine came third in Group C behind favourites Spain and Slovakia and fell short in the end by three points. Their qualifications too were scratchy but they picked up form late in the rounds.
Their last five games resulted in three wins, a draw and a defeat. The wins came against FYR Macedonia, Belarus and Luxembourg while the draw against Slovakia and defeat to Spain proved costly in their quest for Euro qualifications.
Slovenia on the other hand fell short in the group E behind England and Switzerland who were the favourites to go through from the group. Their last five results have been two wins, two defeats and a draw. The wins have been against Estonia and San Marino while the defeat came at the hands of England and Switzerland. The lone draw during the time was against Lithuania at home.
Mykhaylo Fomenko, Ukraine’s manager will hope for a good overall performance from his team in the home tie. He will look to the likes of Yarmolenko, Konoplyanka, Rakitskiy and Kravets to deliver in the absence of influential midfielder Rotan who misses out through injury.
Slovenia meanwhile will be hoping for the one crucial away goal from the likes of Berič, Iličić, Birsa and Kurtič and will setup organized defensively in their quest of taking away something to the return leg at home in a fortnight’s time.
Ukraine go in as the favourites since they play at home under their loud home support, but Slovenia are organized at the back and will look to hit the hosts on the counter. A scored defeat would also be a good result for the visitors.
