Alex Palou is a professional Spanish race car driver, currently in the NTT IndyCar Series in his second season. He was born in Barcelona, Spain, on April 1, 1997. Patou is a member of Chip Ganassi Racing, driving No. 10 for the team. While only 24 years old, the Spanish racer has been on the race track for many years. When he’s not on track, he enjoys other outdoor activities and music.
Palou’s career started in karting when he was only five. His biggest achievement then was winning the WSK Euro Series in 2012, earning the championship title. His debut in open-wheel racing was in the Euroformula Open Championship. He finished his first season at third, missing one point for the runner-up placing. In the following years, he competed in numerous racing events such as GP3, Japanese Formula 3, World Series Formula V8 3.5, Super GT, Super Formula, and IndyCar.
From 2015 to 2016, he participated with Campos Racing in the GP3 Series. During this season, he raced in numerous events, including Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya of Spain, Red Bull Ring of Austria, Silverstone Circuit of England, and Tas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. He won his race in the latter, becoming the first Spanish driver to ever win in the series.
In 2017, he moved to Japan to join the Japanese Formula 3. He participated in ThreeBond with Drago Corse, winning three races but finishing third overall. He also won three poles and a race that year at the Teo Martin Motorsports of the 2017 World Series Formula V8 3.5 Championship. He had a great start but ultimately finished 21st in the championship.
Palou came back to Europe in 2018 to race full-time with Hitech Bullfrog GP for a full season in the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. That year, he earned seven podiums, winning 7th in the championship. In 2019, Palou was back in Japan with McLaren Customer Racing Japan to compete full-time in Super GT GT300 and Super Formula with TCS Nakajima Racing.
Palou finished 15th in Super GT while he had more success in Super Formula, ultimately finishing 3rd. In July of this year, he also tested an IndyCar at Mid-Ohio with Dale Coyne Racing. By December of 2019, he announced he would be moving to the IndyCar Series with Team Goh in Dale Coyne Racing. He had his first race with Team Goh at the 2020 Genesys 300, but Rinus VeeKay took him out. His first IndyCar podium happened at Road America.
In 2021, Palou signed with Chip Ganassi Racing, days after he competed in his rookie IndyCar season. He will be driving No. 10 Honda for the team in the 2021 IndyCar Series season. On April 8, he earned his maiden victory in the IndyCar Series in its season-opening race at Barber Motorsports Park. This season, he took his second podium at the GMR Grand Prix. Palou next participated at the 2021 Indianapolis 500, ultimately losing to Hélio Castroneves and finishing second.
