Known as ‘Awesome Bill from Dawsonville’, Bill Elliot was one of the most respected and popular drivers on the circuit as well as one who had accomplished quite a lot. He was the 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion and has 44 NASCAR Sprint Cup race wins to his name along with 55 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole positions.
He became the first driver ever to win the Winston Million in 1985 and that got him his other nick name, ‘Million Dollar Bill’.
He won two Daytona 500s and had four wins in 1992 along with a single-season record of 11 superspeedway wins in 1985. Elliott was not the most popular driver for nothing. In fact, he won the most Popular Driver award for a record 16 times in his career including 10 successive times between 1991 and 2000. Named as Georgia Athlete of the Year in 1985 and 1988, Bill Elliot was inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame in January 1998. Elliott was also named to the American Auto Writers and Broadcasters Association All America Team in 1985, ‘87, ‘88 and 1992.
