Red Bull has re-signed Daniel Ricciardo after he was dropped by McLaren a year before his contract was to end. He will be the third driver for the team in 2023.

He will be joining the team in an assistive capacity, helping with testing and simulation work as well as commercial activities.

“It is great to bring Daniel back into the Red Bull family. He has enormous talent and such a brilliant character, said Team Principal Christian Horner.

“I know the whole family is excited to be welcoming him home.

“In his role as third driver, Daniel will give us a chance to diversify, assisting in the development of the air, aiding the team with his experience and knowledge of what it takes to succeed in F1.”

Horner also clarified that Ricciardo will not yet be racing for Red Bull. When asked if there was an option where he could be a race driver, in the long run, Horner said:

“No. Daniel’s contract is very specific for a specific reason. We have a contract with Checo for the next two years.”

His other Red Bull team members are happy about the development with Max Verstappen saying that it would have been better if Ricciardo did not leave in the first place.

It would have been better for Daniel if he had stayed longer at Red Bull at the time, Verstappen said.

I did talk to him about it. Its also about feeling comfortable somewhere. That was no longer the case at one point. Then you have to look at alternatives and make the trade-off between sporting success and feeling good somewhere.

However, I do know everyone at Red Bull had his best interests at heart. Instead of leaving, he could have talked to the team about it. But it turned out the way it did.

At the time of his departure, it was widely believed that Ricciardo was doing so because the team was focusing too much on Verstappen.
