Sir Lewis Hamilton is set to end speculation over his future by signing a new three-year contract with Mercedes.

The seven-time Formula One champion is out of contract with the German -British team, and had delayed talks over a new deal until he had sealed the last of those titles, looking for assurances at the same time over the future of team principal Toto Wolff.

He then contracted Covid-19, which further delayed proceedings.

Some thought that the delay in extending his contract was an indication that he was thinking of retiring and hanging up his helmet, but those fears have now been allayed.

Famously, Hamilton does not use an agent to negotiate his contracts, preferring to discuss them one-to-one with Wolff, who has now agreed an extension of his own to remain with the team.

It means that Hamilton, who was knighted by the Queen in the New Years Honours list, will once again start the favourite to clinch an eighth world title in 2021.

He has already secured 95 Grand Prix wins, four more than the previous record set by Michael Schumacher, and the next record he has in his sights is that for pole position. He needs just two more to make it a round 100.

That is way ahead of Schumacher who finished his career with 68 pole positions, three better than Hamiltons idol when he was growing-up Ayrton Senna.

It has not yet been revealed the value of Hamiltons new contract. However, given that the deal which has just expired was worth 40 million a year for the 35-year old Englishman, it would be safe to conclude that his new salary will be somewhere north of that.

He is already reckoned to be Britains richest sportsman, with a net worth that has been estimated to be in excess of 160 million.
