Max Verstappen has rounded out the 2020 Formula 1 season with his second victory of 2020 finishing ahead of the dominant Mercedes drivers on the podium at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.

Verstappen started on pole and barely was challenged in an impressive display labelled as “absolutely clinical” by team boss Christian Horner, while the race at large meandered along, with minimal talking points.

Valtteri Bottas finished second with world champion Lewis Hamilton back on the track after his case of COVID-19, finishing third.

Hamilton finished 124 points clear of Bottas in the Drivers’ Championship, while Verstappen came in third on 214 points.

Sergio Perez edged Dan Ricciardo for fourth and fifth respectively, with the latter claiming the extra point for fastest lap in Abu Dhabi, on the final lap of his final race for Renault.

Verstappen had held that honour, but Ricciardo pinched it from his teammate after he’d already crossed the line.

The Dutchman will be the lead challenger to Mercedes in 2021 and while he was enthused by the season-ending win, he knows more needs to be done to catch them.

“You can’t just rely on this result. We know we still have to improve a lot and we know some areas where we have to really work on,” Verstappen said.

“That’s not only on the car, but power-wise we need more. I hope we learn from the last few years, it’s not like we do it on purpose.”

The 2021 F1 season is due to commence in Melbourne in March.
