This graduate of Journalism is currently being featured fighting at the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and is known for his mastery of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, of which he has a second degree black belt, coupled with some techniques in Grappling and Judo. As of March this year, he is ranked by UFC as number 6 in the welterweight division and number 10 in the world by Sherdog.

Maia was no stranger to combative sports as he trained in Kung Fu and Karate when he was in high school and in Judo when he was younger. He was 19 years old when his cousin introduced him to Brazilian Jiu-Jitso and after almost five years of training, he earned his black belt in the fighting art under the tutelage of Fabio Gurgel.

In September 2001, Maia debuted in the world of mixed martial arts just when he was about to turn 24. He defeated Raul Sosa via TKO in Venezuela through his hard punches and won his very first MMA fight and debut. It was not until four years later that he returned to compete in MMA again. His comeback fight was against Lukas Chlewicki, whom he fought at The Cage - Volume 4 in Helsinki, Finland. Using the armbar, Chlewicki lost the fight by submission.

This Brazilian fighter is a submission specialist. With the exception of a win by TKO and win by a unanimous decision, he has won his next 9 preceding fights by submission. Among these wins was his victory over Fabio Negao in October 2006, using a guillotine choke, to win the Super Challenge Tournament in the 83 kg section.

After six consecutive wins since he debuted in 2001, Maia began to fight in the UFC in October 2007. His rear naked choke and triangle choke became his signature moves that he was awarded with Submission of the Night once in 2007, twice in 2008 and once again in 2009.

His first career loss is from Nate Marquardt of the US during the UFC 102: Couture vs Nogueira in August 2009, where he was knocked out after 21 seconds into the fight. His fights in 2015 with Neil Magny and Ryan LaFlare were all wins by submission and decision.

Over the course of his MMA career, Maia has had a total of 27 fights with 21 wins and 6 losses.
