Gilbert Burns is a professional mixed martial artist from Brazil. He fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and as of December 2021, he is listed as of the UFC’s top welterweight fighters.

In addition to his professional MMA career, he has also won a number of Gold Medals while representing Brazil in events such as the World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship and the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

Burns was born Gilbert Alexander Pontes Burns on July 20, 1986. His hometown is Niteroi in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This Brazilian fighter stands 178 centimeters tall and his last listed weight is 77 kilograms, which places him firmly in the welterweight division.

He hasn’t always been a welterweight from the start of his career to around 2019, he was in the lightweight division. He has a reach of 180 centimeters.

He started his MMA and Jiu-Jitsu journey as a young boy. His father traded service to fix a car for lessons that Gilbert could attend. His first gym was the Academia Associacao Oriente.

Professional MMA Career and the UFC

Most of Burns’ professional MMA career has been with the UFC. But he started fighting for Crown Fighting Championships. He made his professional debut in January 2012. This was in a win against Jose Salgado.

Seven fights into his professional career, he got noticed by the UFC and was signed. His first UFC bout was in July 2014 when he went up against Andreas Stahl. He had three back-to-back wins in less than 18 months before he suffered his first professional loss. This was to Rashid Magomedov in March 2015.

In November of the same year, he bounced back and defeated Lukasz Sajewski. His next loss was to Dan Hooker. This was followed by a streak of six wins against fighters like Mike Davis, Gunnar Nelson, Tyron Woodley, and more.

In February 2021, he lost to Kamaru Usman. In July 2021, he took to the MMA ring again and this time, won against Stephen Thompson.

Representing Brazil

Gilbert is trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has represented and won medals for Brazil in international Jiu-Jitsu competitions.

A few of his more significant wins include gold medals at the 2010 and 2013 World No-Go Jiu-Jitsu Championships. He also won the gold medal at the 2010 World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup which was held in Abu Dhabi. He won another gold in 2011 at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in California.

In addition to the gold medals, he also has a couple of silver medals and a bronze from international championships.
