What do you think would happen if you put two great fighters inside a ring with one goal in mind? A goal to be the best among the rest! That is what will happen this coming November when Rafael dos Anjos and Tony Ferguson face each other and battle it out in the UFC Lightweight Division. Anjos has seen Ferguson to be a worthy competitor even before he lost his championship crown to Eddie Alvarez last month. So how would the two fighter fair against each other? Let us look at their stats.
Rafael dos Anjos, having a record of 25 wins and 8 losses is no ordinary fighter. Ranking number 2 in the lightweight division, he was the first Brazilian lightweight champion and has beaten the calibres of Donald Cerrone, Nate Diaz, and former champion Benson Henderson. Though he has a slight disadvantage in terms of height and reach compared to Ferguson, it is compensated by his jiu-jitsu fighting style, consistency and his underrated power which has overwhelmed a lot of other great athletes.
Dos Anjos is a power fighter and is predicted to give his all out in his upcoming fight with Fergurson after losing last July from Eddie Alvarez. It was an unexpected defeat for Dos Anjos after defending his title for two consecutive fights last March and December 2015 from Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone respectively. With an impressive strike and takedown defence record, Dos Anjos will definitely be a fighter to watch out for.
Tony Ferguson, who has a record of 22 wins and 3 losses has also proven himself in the ring. His ground skill is considered as one of the best in the industry having majority of his wins through submission. He has beaten fighters like Abel Trujillo and Gleison Tibau who are also great fighters themselves. Ferguson has also beaten Edson Barboza even with a short notice, when Nurmagomedov pulled out of a December 2015 bout. Winning his last eight fights, he is definitely no weak fighter.
Ferguson who is currently undefeated since October 2013 is a massive beast to conquer. With his Brabo Choke and Rear-Naked Choke moves, dos Anjos should be very cautious of his moves. With both fighters never been in the same octagon to battle against each other, it would be natural to predict that both fighters will be dependent on how their upcoming opponent moved against their foes in their previous fights.
Basically in terms of statistics, the two are evenly matched. Ferguson is a striker and an active attacker while Dos Anjos is known for his solid defence tactics. Whoever loses focus will definitely be the looser in this fight. The only deciding factor that would affect the result of the fight is their drive to win. Anjos who wanted to seek redemption after losing his title, and Ferguson who has now the opportunity to show the world what a great fighter he is. How much they want it? Only they can answer that. For us, we just have to wait a bit longer to find out.
