Riku Helenius is a Finnish goalie on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Helenius was drafted 15th overall in 2006 by the Tampa Bay Ligtning, after a good year in the Finnish junior leagues, posting a 2.68 GAA in 26 games with Ilves. He came to the WHL in 2007, where he played well for the Seattle Thunderbirds and was called up to the Lightning’s minor league program. He appeared in one NHL game, playing the last half of the 3rd period in a game the Lightning were losing 6-1, and did not allow any goals. He started the 2009-10 season in the AHL, but joined Sodertalje midway through the year. Helenius left Sweden in 2010 to come play in North America, and will probably end up playing at least a year in the AHL since Dan Ellis was signed to be the starter in the 2010 offseason.
Helenius won a silver medal with Finland at the 2006 U18 World Juniors, and it was partly his performance at that tournament that earned him such a high draft pick.
