John Tavares is a Canadian center on the New York Islanders.

Tavares was drafted first overall in the 2009 NHL draft by New York, after putting together one of the most impressive junior careers in history. He was so talented as a young hockey player, that the OHL altered its age restrictions and allowed him to be drafted at age 14, in 2005. As the youngest player ever drafted in the OHL, he began his career with the Oshawa Generals, scoring his first goal shortly after he turned 15. He won the CHL Rookie of the Year after scoring 45 goals and 77 points. In 2007, he broke Wayne Gretzky’s OHL record for most goals as a 16 year old, finishing the season with 72 goals and 134 points. He was traded to the London Knights midway through the 2008-09 season, as the Knights held a better chance of advancing in the OHL playoffs than the struggling Generals. In 2009, after a strong showing at the 2009 World Juniors, Tavares cemented his position as the top draft pick and was selected by the Islanders.

Tavares played for Team Canada at three different international competitions, winning gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships.
