Joey Macdonald is a Canadian goalie on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
MacDonald was undrafted after playing in the OHL and the QMJHL. He was signed by Detroit and played in their minor league system for a few seasons before making his NHL debut as a backup in 2006. MacDonald left the Wings’ AHL team as one of the top goalies in club history. He played 8 games with Detroit, before signing with Boston later that season. He then signed with New York in 2007, where he was expected to be a backup yet again. However, serious injuries to starting keeper Rick DiPietro in the 2008-09 season gave MacDonald a chance to play as the starter. Despite playing behind a poor Islanders team, he posted a 3.22 GAA and .901 save percentage. Macdonald was signed by the Leafs in 2009, primarily to back up Vesa Toskala and Jonas Gustavsson.
