After a disappointing offseason last year, where they lost star players Chris Drury and Daniel Briere, the Sabres managed to keep most of their key players in place this time around. Although the loss of veteran defenseman Dmitri Kalinin will hurt, Buffalo made a solid move to replace him by trading for Craig Rivet. Rivet had 35 points and 104 penalty minutes for San Jose last season, and should help the Sabres add some offense from the blueline.
The Sabres also ensured that they would have solid goaltending for the near future, by signing starter Ryan Miller to a five year deal. Veteran Patrick Lalime was also acquired, giving them a reliable backup option as well.
The Sabres will be interesting to watch next season. With Montreal, Boston and Ottawa in the Northeast, Buffalo will have their hands full. The rest of the East will be strong as well, with Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Carolina and Washington all looking to make the playoffs. Buffalo should have what it takes to remain competitive, but may be left out in the end.
