Backswing refers to a swing sequence immediately following after doing takeaway. This swing sequence brings your club up traveling behind the head of the player. The backswing is often considered the foundation of the strength or power that you create before takeaway. Although you do not hit the ball during backswing, the most important part is the outcome that will result once you hit the ball.
Importance of Quality Backswing
The backswing is one of the areas that need to be fined tuned for a player to be able to correctly gage the distance from the tee. If the player does not have quality backswing, achieving authority and accuracy during strike will be impossible. Hence, it is important to spend time working on the technical aspects of strengthening backswings. The goal of having quality backswings is positioning the golf club and the player’s body to achieve good moves towards the target. So the golf club needs to be position at the top of the swing. The correct position of the player’s body ensures that the body is in place allowing it to aggressively turn smoothly without losing balance.
Backswing Common Mistakes
When doing backswings a lot of things can happen, either a player gets it correctly or not. One of the common mistakes for backswing is being too narrow or there is not enough space for the club to move during swings. As much as possible keep the club wide as it makes way towards the top, otherwise the player will struggle with a splice. If the club is too close to the right shoulder of the player at the top of the swing, there would not be enough space to swing down towards the tee. Another common mistake is being too fast during backswing. Making a fast backswing will result to not giving enough time to position it correctly in time for the impact to arrive. Although it is commendable to have fast backswing, the player must also learn to make fast movements to keep up with the movement of the club.
Correcting Backswing Positions
Correcting the backswing positions will help the player avoid the common mistakes when performing backswings. Before doing takeaway, make sure that the left arm is straight from the moment the ball is address until it reaches the top. Do not bend the left elbow during backswing. The player must also consider the position of their right knee. As much as possible the right knee should retain its flexibility during backswing. If the golfer fails to maintain the flex of their right knee it might lead to locking your right knee swing error.
