HJ Choi is known in Korea as Hye Jung Choi. She was born on December 24, 1984 in Seoul, South Korea. Choi’s amateur career was a great one, marked by winning the 1999 Korean Junior Championship, was a member of the Korean National Team in 2001 and was winner of the 2001 Asia Amateur Championship. In 2002, Choi turned professional but it was only in 2004 that she started joining the KLPGA. While on the 2005 Futures Tour, Choi made four top 10 finishes. Because of her impressive performance, Choi was given a non-exempt tour card in the 2005 LPGA Q-School where she finished 54th.
Among the tours available, Choi decided to focus more on the Futures Tour where she plays quite well. Choi’s performance was so good in the Futures Tour that she even managed to finish 13th on the Futures Tour money list. It was because of this accomplishment that Choi was once again given a pass to the LPGA Q-School, this time in the final round. In the LPGA Q-School final round, Choi was up against In-Kyung Kim and ended up tied for co-medalist honors. This gave Choi an exempt card for the 2007 LPGA tour.
To date, 2007 was Choi’s best and solid season. In 2007, she finished at the top 50 of the money list (at 45th with $293,384 career earnings) and was also able to score four top ten finishes. She scored her best scoring average also in the year 2007 where her score averaged at 73.08. Her solid performance in the 2007 LPGA tour garnered Choi another exempt status for the 2008 LPGA tour. It was also in the year 2007 that Choi won the Hite Cup Championship – Choi’s first KLPGA tournament win.
