As an amateur, Varner played high school golf for Forestview High School. For college, he attended East Carolina. There, he holds the record for being the first player in the college’s history to be named the Conference USA Player of the Year.

He turned pro in 2012 and started playing for the Web.com Tour. In 2012, he made a Top 2 finish at the Rex Hospital Open. For his first full season, he landed in the 30th spot on the money list. Later, in 2015, he had five top-25 finishes. He earned his first professional victory in 2016 when he won the Australian PGA Championship on the European Tour. Varner is the first American to win this tournament since 1978.

Varner tied for the second spot at the PGA Championship in 2019. In 2021, he tied for second place at the RBC Heritage. In the following year, in 2022, he won the PF Saudi International.
