World number one Rory McIlroy has withstood a remarkable final round from Justin Rose to clinch the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai by two strokes.

McIlroy birdied the final five holes to cap a stellar 2012 season, while Rose stormed home to break the course record with a 10-under 62 in the final round.

The Northern Irishman, though, was the talk of the town, after claiming the PGA Championship this year, whilst topping the European and PGA Tour money lists too.

“Coming here with the (European Tour’s) Race to Dubai wrapped up I wanted to win the tournament trophy too and that’s what I’ve done,” McIlroy said.

“And to back up 2011 with another major and to be part of an unbelievable story at the Ryder Cup has made it an incredible year. But hopefully I can emulate it or do even better next year.”
