Luke Donald Reaches the top after BMW Win

Luke Donald is the new world number one after winning the BMW PGA championships on Sunday, when he defeated fellow Englishman Lee Westwood in a tight duel. He landed his approach on to the number 18 green on the first playoff hole while Westwood sent his shot flying to the water hazard nearby.luke donald

This victory includes Donald in the small group of Englishmen who held the top spot including Westwood and Nick Faldo since the rankings were established in 1986. He will replace Westwood in the rankings when they are made official on Monday.

Westwood took the lead after making four birdies in nine holes after a bogey on no. 3 before making another birdie on the no. 15 green. He then made 7-iron draw that rolled within four feet of the hole, which took him two strokes ahead of Donald. However, he lost the lead once they reached no. 16 when Donald landed the ball within a foot of the hole.

“Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it,” Donald said. “It is an amazing accomplishment. It is something I will be very proud of when I look back. I will savor this moment, it’s very special. I think I will stay the same person, I hope I do. I’m looking forward to the challenge of staying No. 1. I know Lee and Martin (Kaymer) will be chasing me very hard.”

He had previously missed two chances to become the world number 1, first with his defeat to Ian Poulter in the World Match Play I in Spain and again at a playoff against Brandt Snedeker at the Heritage in April. However, his consistent performance, always placing in the top 10 for the past nine tournaments and the victory at the Accenture Match Play event in Arizona ensured a number one ranking on the horizon.
