World number six Bryson DeChambeau has sparked controversy after claiming his Cobra driver “sucks” leading to a strong response.
The 2020 US Open winner finished the first day of The Open carding one-over-72, well off the pace set by South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen on six-under at Royal St George’s Golf Course.
The American, who is renowned for his big driving ability, hit only four of 14 fairways in his opening round.
Thats what I said a couple days ago if I can hit it down the middle of the fairway, thats great, but with the driver right now, the driver sucks, DeChambeau said.
Its not a good (club) face for me and were still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mis-hits. Im living on the razors edge like Ive told people for a long time.
When I did get it outside of the fairway, like in the first cut and whatnot, I catch jumpers out of there and I couldnt control my wedges. Its quite finicky for me because its a golf course thats pretty short, and so when I hit driver and it doesnt go in the fairway, its first cut or whatever, or its in the hay, its tough for me to get it out on to the green and control that.
DeChambeau added: Its literally the physics and the way that they build heads now. Its not the right design, unfortunately, and weve been trying to fix it (with no) results yet.
The American’s outburst prompted a stinging reply from Cobra’s tour operations manager Ben Schomin, who caddied for DeChambeau a fortnight ago, referring to him as an “eight-year-old”.
Its like an 8-year-old that gets mad at you, he told Golf Week. They might fly off the handle and say, I hate you. But then you go. Whoa, no you dont.
We know as adults that they really dont mean that and I know that if I got him cornered right now and said, What the hell did you say that for, he would say that he was mad. He didnt really mean to say it that harshly. He knows how much everyone bends over backwards for him, but its still not cool.
He added: Everybody is bending over backwards. Weve got multiple guys in R&D who are CADing (computer-aided design) this and CAD-ing that, trying to get this and that into the pipeline faster. (Bryson) knows it.
Its just really, really painful when he says something that stupid. He has never really been happy, ever [with his driver]. Like, its very rare where hes happy.”
