John Johnson III was born on December 19, 1995, in Hyattsville, Maryland. The free safety stands 185 cm tall and his weight was last listed at 95 kg.
He attended Northwestern High School in his hometown of Hyattsville, Maryland. There he was a wide receiver and safety. 247Sports rated him a two-star recruit by the time he was a senior. He later committed to play for Boston College.
In 2017, he was invited to play in the Senior Bowl.
He was drafted into the NFL during the 2017 NFL Draft and was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round. He was the 91st overall pick. Sean McVay named him as the third strong safety in his rookie year.
He did fairly well with the Rams and was instrumental in sending the team to Super Bowl LII.
In March 2021, he signed with the Cleveland Browns for a three-year deal that was worth $33.75 million.
