While at Houston, he played in 50 games, accumulating 210 catches and 3,289 yards (15.7 YPC). He scored 19 touchdowns. In his senior year, he made 91 catches for 1,456 yards (16.0 YPC) and seven touchdowns. He was named to First-team All-Conference USA.

Standing five feet eleven inches tall, Donnie weighs 184 pounds. In college, Avery was primarily a return specialist for his first few seasons and was converted to a wideout in his senior year. He proved to be a major force as a receiver. Entering the NFL, he has fine talent and potential as both a receiver and a return man. He’s got great speed, some fine moves and good open field vision. Route running will be one of the areas he’ll have to work on in order to reach his full potential as a receiver. There are a lot of skill drills in his future; this guy has game-breaking chops.
