John William Volek is a professional quarterback for the NFL San Diego Chargers. Known as Billy Volek, he played football in college for Fresno State. The Tennessee Titans signed him in 2001 as an undrafted free agent. He presently serves as the second-string quarterback for the San Diego Chargers.
While at Fresno State, Volek led the team to the 1999 WAC title. He holds the NCAA record for the lowest percentage of passes intercepted in a college career.
From 2000 through 2005, Volek played for the Titans, primarily as their backup QB. In 2006, he signed with San Diego. In seven years, he has appeared in 30 games, completing 316 of 529 passes (59.7-percent) for a total of 3,746 yards. He’s thrown 27 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His rating stands at 84.9.
Volek is one of the more experienced backup quarterbacks in the league. He’s a fine leader and accurate passer who understands the game. He can see the entire field, possesses good pocket smarts and knows how to get rid of the ball. Volek is not a great athlete and he does not have first-rate arm strength, but he’s one of the better performers when it comes to having to fill-in at a moments notice. He has some of the best intangibles in the league.
