Formerly known by the name, Bambalapitiya Recreation Club, the Burgher Recreation Club is a first class cricket team which is entirely based in Colombo in Sri Lanka. This team has won the P Saravanamuttu Trophy once in 1955-56. The Captain of this team is Muditha Fernando with the home ground being the Burgher Recreation Club Ground. So far, this team hasn’t won a single Premier Limited Overs tournament or Inter Provincial Twenty20 tournament too.
The Burgher Recreation Club was formed in 1896. On 9th November, 1901, this club won their first ever cricket match. On 31st July, 1915, this club got renamed to another name, the Burgher Recreation Club. By 1922, a new pavilion got built and the club was adjudged as cricket champions by 1925. B.R. Heyn, the club cricketer was elected as the captain of the Ceylon Cricket Team in 1947.
In 2000, the club defeated Singha CC team by eight wickets. At first the latter team made 185 in 42 overs. BRC was left with this challenge which they accepted and easily made a century due to the partnership of Chaminda Hadunhettige and Manoj Mendis. The club knocked off the runs in just 34 overs with a loss of just two wickets. The focus of the match was 90 runs scored by duo, Manoj Mendes, Chaminda Hadunhettige (the opening batsman)
In 2004-05 Twenty20 match, the club won by 9 runs to Moors Sports Club. In 2006-07, at the Twenty20 match, the club won by six wickets against Badureliya Sports Club. Similarly, in the same match, this club also won to Colts Cricket Club by six wickets. However, the club lost to Chilaw Marians Cricket Club by 113 runs. In 2009-10 first class match held at Air Force Ground in Colombo, the BRC team was defeated by Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club by seven runs.
