Zimbabwe women’s cricket team debuted in 2006 playing its first qualifying match in the International Cricket Council’s Women’s World Cup qualifying series in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Zimbabwe was grouped with Scotland, Ireland and Pakistan in Group B and defeating Scotland by 75 runs in the opening match. Pakistan defeated Zimbabwe in the second game by nine wickets after Zimbabwe set a mere target of 58.
The national team comprising of 26 members was selected post the third women’s inter- provincial tournament held in August in Zimbabwe. The team was then groomed and underwent intensive training at a high performance centers at the CFX Academy in the capital and Bulawayo before touring to South Africa for the qualifiers.
The team is captained by Julia Chibhabha who is also the sister of national cricket team player Chamunorwa. Under the management of Chiedza Mafunga the playing eleven consists of Chinyemba, Kudzibatira, Jinjika, Chibhabha, Rainsford, Mpofu, Nyathi, Marange, Mayers, Milo and Saili.
