Oliver James Newby is a professional English cricketer who currently plays for Lancashire County Cricket Club. Born on 26th August 1984 in Blackburn, Lancashire, this fast-medium bowler has the potential to extract bounce from any pitch as he has a high arm action.
Oliver is a product of the Lancashire Academy. His first-class debut came in the 2003. He played a One-Day match against India A during his debut season at Blackpool and grabbed a couple of wickets in his initial two overs. After spending one more season with Lancashire, he played for Nottinghamshire on loan for a month in 2005, playing a couple of County Championship games for them.
In 2006, he moved back to Lancashire. He got a chance to play seven County Championship matches as a lot of the county’s fast bowlers were either included in the English squad or were struggling with injuries. He proved to be an improved bowler with nineteen wickets at a bowing average of 27.52. His form continued in the next season as well and he took twenty two wickets in nine first-class matches at an average of 30.45. As a result, he was offered a new two-year contract by Lancashire.
Newby eyed a regular place in first team of Lancashire in the 2010 season. However, in the month of May, he suffered an injury which side-lined him from the remaining season.
Newby has played 47 First Class matches till date and has picked up 117 wickets at an average of 32.71 with best figures of 5 for 69 runs.
