In February 2006, Yusuf Abdulla debuted in first class cricket for KwaZulu Natal. Further, he was made a part of the Rest of South Africa squad to play against Pakistan. In 2007, he was selected in the South Africa A squad for the Indian tour and he performed nicely. So, he was selected in the Twenty20 match against Australia in 2009. Here, he took 1 wicket for 16 runs.
During the IPL 2009 season, Jerome Taylor, the West Indian fast bowler, had to suffer a vehicle accident. So, his franchisee, Kings XI Punjab signed Yusuf Abdulla as a replacement for Taylor. This was a successful move as midway through the tournament, he became the leading wicket taker. This performance resulted in his selected for the ICC World Twenty20 squad.
During the 2007-08 season of the Pro20, he made 10 dismissals at an average of 13.40. In the shorter form of the game, Abdulla was the main strike bowler of the Dolphins.
Yusuf Abdulla has played in 34 Twenty20 matches in which he got the opportunity to bowl in 33 innings. He has bowled 732 deliveries in which he has conceded 783 runs and has claimed 48 wickets. His bowling strike rate was 15.2, economy rate was 6.41 and bowling average was 16.31.
