Smits is a Right-hand batsman and is at fielding position in the game. For quite some time he struggled to get a breakthrough in the game due to his arch rival Reinout Scholte. Since his retirement, Smits’s game has improved considerably and hence he was rewarded by being named as the only wicketkeeper in the World Cup team and vice captain as well.

Though his batting worsened which became a threat to keep him in the team but the selectors had the faith in him and thus he managed to get a place in the World Cup. The victory over Namibia is supposed to be his career highlight. Jack Rusell is his favorite player. As a wicketkeeper Smits has a firm pair of hands which is the motivating factor for him as well as for the team, Smits is a very popular among his teammates and is known for doing pranks and tricks in the dressing rooms. He is fondly called Piglet which means he takes the same as what he gives.
