During, his initial years, his bowling impressed more than his batting, but he has an ability to hit the ball cleanly. Weerarante got sidelined, in 2003, after his 11thODI, due to his injury and a poor form. This hindered his progress in fixing a permanent place for himself in the team. He had to spend almost five years, in regaining his form. But his will, made him make a stunning comeback, with the fastest fifty in one day cricket, during a domestic match in 2005. This brought him back in the national squad, and was selected for the tour of West Indies as well as the Asia Cup in 2008.
