Upul Tharanga of Sri Lanka cricket team bats left handedly and is an occasional wicketkeeper. He has also played for Sri Lanka Board XI, Singha Sports Club, Ruhuna, Nondescripts Cricket Club and Asia XI.

Tharanga debuted in One day Internationals on 2nd August 2005 at Dambulla against West Indies. In this match, he was the opening batsman and scored 6 runs in 12 balls. Sri Lanka was victorious in this match by 50 runs. The first Test match of Tharanga was played from 18th to 22nd December 2005 at Ahmedabad against India. In the 1st innings, he took 1 catch and scored 2 runs in 14 deliveries while batting at the No. 1 position. In the 2nd innings, he was again sent to bat at the No. 1 spot and he scored 47 runs in 117 balls. India won this match by 259 runs.
