The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have by far and away the best record of all the sides in the six season history of the IPL. The franchise has reached won two titles, lost in three other finals, and lost in the semi-final during the only season that they didn’t contest the final.
CSK have retained five players from the squad that made it as far as the final in IPL 6, before losing to the Mumbai Indians. There was little surprise that skipper MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina and West Indian Dwayne Bravo were all retained.
The most expensive signing made by CSK is the South African T20 captain Faf du Plessis. The Proteas captain cost the franchise Rs 4,75,00,000. Other major signings made by CSK for IPL 7 include Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith and Samuel Badree. Badree cost the side Rs 30 lakhs and may turn out to one of the great bargains of this year’s auction.
CSK made a number of signings of Indian bowlers who have all proved themselves to be decent T20 performers; Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey. They have also added the Indian U19 representative, Baba Aparajith to this season’s squad.
The batting line up looks strong enough to challenge anything that the other seven teams in this season’s tournament can field, with Faf du Plessis, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith all able to take bowling attacks apart in the shortest format of the game.
With the early part of the competition being played in the UAE, where the pitches are likely to favour spin bowling, CSK look well prepared to make the most of the conditions, with Samuel Badree, Ravichandran Ashwin ready to spin their webs of deceit. The majority of the seam bowling is likely to be done by Mohit Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Ben Hilfenhaus.
