MS Dhoni celebrated the Chennai Super Kings’ fourth Indian Premier League title as the five-time runners-up won the final over the Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs on Friday night.

Faf du Plessis was the Player of the Match after a spectacular knock of 86 from 59 balls for CSK, which set up their imposing total of 192-3.

In reply, KKR fell short despite a promising opening stand, finishing up 165-9 with Shardul Thakur taking 38-3 and Josh Hazlewood claiming 29-2.

The triumph is CSK’s fourth IPL title and first since 2018, having been runners-up in 2019.

“Every final is special, if you look at stats, we may say we’re the most consistent team to lose the final too,” Dhoni said.

“I feel it’s important to come back strong, especially in the knockouts.”

KKR stormed into the playoffs with excellent late season form while CSK were strong across the entire season, broken into Indian and UAE legs, finished 9-5 before winning straight through to the decider.

“The break really helped them,” Dhoni said. “Coming to CSK, we shuffled players.

“We had match winners coming game after game and doing really well.”

Meanwhile, beaten KKR skipper Eoin Morgan said: “We are extremely proud of the fight we have shown. The character and fight is trademark.”
