Eoin Morgan has helped break Kolkata Knight Riders’ ordinary start to the 2021 Indian Premier League season with a crucial knock in their five-wicket win over the Punjab Kings on Monday.
The England captain made 47no from 40 balls, combining with Rahul Tripathi with 41 from 32 for a 66-run stand in eight overs.
The win moves KKR to 2-4 and gets them off bottom spot up to seventh, while the Kings slip to 2-4 and sixth spot.
“It was nice to lead the team,” Morgan said post-game. “We’ve worked incredibly hard, but didn’t perform as well as we would have liked initially.
“Today our performance was really, really impressive, especially from our bowlers and the way we started and kept the pressure throughout.”
Shivam Mavi got rid of Gayle and finished with 1-13 from four overs, while Prasidh Krishna claimed 3-30 from four overs and Sunil Narine and Patrick Cummins both took two wickets.
“Mavi was only in his second game this season, and bowling four together is something we don’t do this often,” Morgan said.
“His match-up against Gayle was favourable. He had started well last game so huge credit to him.”
Kings captain Rahul labeled his side’s performance as “poor”.
“It was a poor performance from us,” he said. “We should have adapted better on a new pitch, we could have applied a lot more with the bat and get that extra 20-30 runs.
“The wicket was a bit low and slow, but 120-130 was not enough. A few soft dismissals are that’s costing us the game.”
