Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan says he’s “delighted” with his side’s start to the 2021 Indian Premier League after a 10-run win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.
Opener Nitish Rana scored 80 from 56 including four sixes and nine fours, combining well with Rahul Tripathi at three, who made 53 from 29 balls in a 93-run second wicket stand.
The Sunrisers lost Warner cheaply for 3 and Wriddhiman Saha for 7 in reply, before falling short at 5-177 with Manish Pandey making an unbeaten 61no from 44 balls to offer hope.
“Delighted, the build up to the tournament has been pretty good,” Morgan said after the game.
“The camp before the tournament, the guys seemed to gel really well. I thought it was magnificent the guys batted today at the top of the order in particularly, Nitish and Tripathi.
“And the bowling too, couldn’t have asked for a better start. It was a tight game against a really tough side.”
Prasidh Krishna took 2-35 for KKR, while Pat Cummins, Andre Russell and Shikab Al Hasan all finished with 1-30, 1-32 and 1-34 respectively.
Warner admitted he was surprised by KKR’s score and rued misexecution with the ball.
“I didn’t think there were that many runs in that wicket,” he said. “They adapted really well. We just mis-executed a little bit.”
