Ben Stokes has revealed he asked England captain Joe Root about replacing him at number three in the ODI batting line-up and how to play the role.
Normal England number three Root is absent from the ODI series as he rests back home with his family having not been included in the T20I series which preceded the 50-over games.
The Root replacement was hotly discussed with the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone thrown into the conversation before Stokes stepped out on Tuesday.
“There is going to be talk whoever was going to fill that place at number three with Rooty not being here,” Stokes said.
“I will just let people keep talking, and I will just go out and try and do what I have been asked to do.”
The 2019 World Cup hero added: “I did actually message Rooty asking him about his mindset at number three and he was pretty clear to me - saying just play the way you play.
“Just because he plays a certain way, doesn’t mean that I need to play like that. We kept it pretty simple.
“It’s just a slightly different role batting at number three rather than my normal five or six position in this team - just looking to potentially be facing 100 balls compared to maybe 60 or 70 like I normally do.
“I haven’t got to change too much. I just might find myself in a slightly different situation, especially when I’m starting off my innings.”
The series continues with the second ODI on Friday in Pune with Stokes set to resume the role again.
