Australia's Steve Smith celebrates his half century during day two of the fifth test match at The Oval, London.

Steven Smith’s lean Test series against Pakistan has seen him lose his mantle as the best batsman in the latest ICC Test Player Rankings released on Wednesday.

India captain Virat Kohli has overtaken Smith, who managed only 40 runs in two innings in the two-Test series against Pakistan.

Kohli produced a score of 136 in India’s day-night Test match against Bangladesh last week to propel him into top spot.

Smith could only manage 40 runs against Pakistan with Australia’s top order firing, led by David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne.

The former Australia captain entered the crease in both Tests with the legwork already done, at 2-351 and 2-369.

Smith had scored a remarkable 774 runs at an average of 110.57 during the Ashes in mid-year to take over the number one ranking.

Kohli is slightly ahead of Smith, with New Zealand’s Kane Williamson ranked third ahead of their tour of Australia for three Test matches starting on Thursday in Perth.

Warner’s sensational series against Pakistan sees him move up to fifth, while Labuschagne rises inside the top 10 for the first time in eighth.

Patrick Cummins remained the top ranked bowler in Test cricket, ahead of South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada and West IndiesJason Holder.
