Delhi opener has Stepped down from Delhi Ranji team’s captaincy and the pacer, Ishant Sharma has been named as his replacement as the skipper.
The 36-year-old opener, Gautam Gambhir who captained Delhi for last four Ranji seasons has expressed his desire to continue as a player.
A senior DDCA official told PTI that Gautam Gambhir wrote a letter to DDCA administrator Vikramjit Sen, committee chairman Atul Wassan and Cricket Affair Committee ( CAC) chairman madan Lal in which he made it clear that this is the right time for someone else to take over the captaincy role as he wants to play purely as a player.
During the last season in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Gambhir was removed from captaincy and young Rishabh Pant was given the responsibility.
Last year, Delhi couldn’t qualify for the knockout matches and ended the campaign with the bitter exchange of words between Gambhir and Coach KP Bhasker.
Asked about Ishant Selection as a captain, the DDCA official said, “Ishant has played 77 matches and now that he is unlikely to be selected for limited overs matches, he will be available for all group league games.”
“Rishabh will have his India A commitments and Unmukt Chand have had too many disastrous seasons to be even considered for leadership role.”
The team did have few surprises including batsman, Kunal Chandela selected purely on the basis of a triple hundred for North Zone University in Vizzy Trophy.
Left arm Spinner Vikas Mishra has made a comeback replacing Varun Sood.
