Two sides who are already eliminated from the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL), the Gujarat Lions and the Delhi Daredevils, face each other in Match No.50 of the qualifying phase of the tournament at Green Park in Kanpur.
Going into the game, both sides have eight points, with the Lions in sixth position, one ahead of their visitors, but having played one game more.
The Lions hopes of progressing through to the knockout phase of IPL 2017 were effectively ended when they lost an astonishing match away against the Delhi Daredevils.
The Lions posted a massive 208-7, with both Raina and Karthik scoring half-centuries. However, the home side’s batsmen then struck an amazing 20 sixes, as they reached their target in a mere 17.3 overs. Pant scoring 97, and striking 9 of those sixes, while Samson hit 7 sixes in his 61.
The Lions did show enough spirit to come back from that loss, to win their most recent fixture, when they chased down 190 to beat Kings XI Punjab. Dwayne Smith scoring 74, as they got home for the loss of just four wickets.
Results elsewhere earlier in the week, mean that Delhi can no longer accumulate enough points to secure a top four finish. The maximum points total they can now manage is 14, and fourth placed Sunrisers Hyderabad already have 15 to their credit.
After their stunning victory over the Lions, Delhi’s young side collapsed and burned in their following fixture, when they came up against the title chasing Mumbai Indians, Mumbai scoring 212-3, before dismissing the Daredevils in less than 14 overs for just 66.
The heroes of the Gujarat victory, Pant and Samson, lasting just four balls between them, and both being dismissed for ducks.
In all, the teams have played each other just three times previously, with the Lions winning once, and the Daredevils twice.
