Born on January 11, 1981, Maureen Shea is known as the Real Million Dollar Baby and rose to fame when media reported that Oscar-winning actress, Hilary Swank, attended all of her amateur bouts. Born in the Bronx in New York, Shea started training under Luigi Olcese, who is now her manager. She eventually moved to Gleason’s gym to train with Hector Roca, who helped her get ready for Million Dollar Baby, where she played Hilary Swank’s sparring partner during Swank’s training for the role.
She has her own publicist, adviser and nutritionist. Being a vegan, Shea is provided vegan meals by nutritionist and coach, Robert Ferguson.
The 29-year old is ranked in the top 10 of most sanctioning organizations. She is also the host of a boxing show called Shea’s Corner on Bronxnet Television as well as commentated on several boxing tournaments in English and Spanish.
Shea lost the WBA Super featherweight title on February 21, 2009 to Kina Malpartida in the tenth round by a TKO. On August, she lost to Lindsay Garbatt on the 7th round. Shea took a hard beating with this fight, because it was clear that she had a stronger opponent in Garbatt. The round had to be halted when it was clear that Shea was out of the bout. With this loss, Shea fell to a record of 13-2 with 7 KO’s.
