Jose Ramirez is a professional boxer, who is a former unified light-welterweight WBC and WBO titleholder. Ramirez was ranked as the second-best active light-welterweight champion by BoxRec and The Ring. He was born and raised in Avenal, California, where he first learned his passion for boxing.
Early Career in Boxing
Boxing gave Ramirez fulfillment and recognition he’d never thought of achieving. When he was a beginner, he bagged the United States national amateur boxing championships - Lightweight division at the US Olympic Training Center. He’s also a recipient of the Jr. Golden Gloves National title, and two-time Jr. Ringside World Champion titles. During the 2012 Olympics held in the US, he was able to defeat Olympic gold medalist Raynell Williams.
Professional Boxing Career
When Ramirez started as a boxer, he signed with Bob Arum’s Top Rank to promote his events. His first fight was with Johnny Garcia, whom he defeated via unanimous decision in December 2015. This made him win the vacant WBC Continental America’s light welterweight title.
During his flight to become the WBC light welterweight champion wasn’t easy, as he has to defeat many champions of the same division. One of them was Orozco whom he dropped twice. Even so, the fight was intense and full of aggressiveness between the two fighters. In the end, Ramirez won the fight.
Notable Boxing Matches
In July 2019, he was bound to face Maurice Hooker, an undefeated champion. The fight was action-packed, and Ramirez managed to knock him down in the first round. As the fight progresses, the tables have turned to Hooker, but this stopped on the 6th round when Ramirez released two left punches on his opponent’s head and chin. Ramirez won via technical knockout.
