David Benavidez, also known as El Bandera Roja, is an American professional boxer. He is included to be one of the most active super-middleweight boxers, according to The Ring, BoxRec, and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board.

Benavidez is of Mexican descent through his father and Ecuadorian through his mother, yet he was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He also has an older brother named Jose Benavidez, who is also a professional boxer. Benavidez started boxing at 3 years old, but growing up, he struggled with his diet and discipline. Nevertheless, during his amateur days, he had a stunning record of 15 wins and 0 losses.

Benevidez made his debut when he was 16 years old when he managed to defeat Erasmo Moreno by knockout. Also, he fought for his first belt against Robin Williams in the NABF Junior light heavyweight title. In 2015, he had a total of 12 wins, 11 stoppages, and 0 losses, and this made him sign with Sampson Boxing for his boxing promotion.

The first WBC Super middleweight fight that he had encountered is against Ronald Gavril, whom he had defeated via split decision, where two of the judges favored Benevidez. Benevidez once shared that Gavril that he is the toughest opponent he had ever encountered. A couple of months later, Benevidez and Gavril announced their rematch, and Benevidez successfully won again.

In 2018, he is supposed to defend his WBC title against Matt Korobov, as they will be playing against Mikey Garcia; and Robert Easter Jr. in Los Angeles, California. On May 23, Bob Arum announced that he gave Benevidez a signing bonus of $250,000.00, which led Benevidez’s former promoter to file a case against him. By June 13, he agreed to return the signing to Top Rank.

In September 2018, Benevidez was once again put into the spotlight when he tested positive for cocaine collected by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA). Because of this incident, he was stripped of his title and he also received a 4-month suspension to fight. At the end of 2018, he announced that he will be returning by March next year.

In August 2020, he fought against Roamer Alexis Angulo. Although he won, he was stripped out of his title again after he came in at 170.8 pounds, which is 3 pounds over the standard weight for the WBC super-middleweight title.
