Antonion Margarito, who carries the alias ‘Tijuana Tornado’ is currently the IBF Welterweight champion. This Mexican-born boxer started to fight at age 15 and turned pro in 1994, beating Jose Trujillo in four rounds. His first KO was in October of 2005 when he defeated victor Angulo in the second round. He lost his first professional fight a few months later when he was defeated by Victor Lozoya by a unanimous decision after six rounds.
His first attempt at a world title came in July 21, 2001 against Daniel Santos. He failed to get the WBO World welterweight crown when the fight had to be stopped after the two fighters suffered deep gashes in the head which landed both in the hospital. The round was declared a no contest and Santos retained the title, although no loss was added to Margarito’s record. When Santos eventually vacated the title in order to pursue the WBO world Junior middleweight championship title, Margarito was in for the title opposite Antonio Diaz, a fight which he won on March 16, 20002 after ten rounds. After successfully defending his title he proceeded to go up and compete in the junior middleweight division and made his debut on October 17, 2003, defeating Maurice Brently with a KO after 2 rounds.
Margarito lost his WBO title to Paul Williams in 2007 and in 2008 grabbed the IBF title from Cintron in a rematch which he won after a landing a strong liver punch in Cintron’s midsection. Margarito soon vacated this title in favor of a fight against WBA champ Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.
Recently, in an attempt to redeem himself after a hand-wrap scandal that caused Margarito to be banned from Nevada, he went head to head against Manny Pacquiao. However, Margarito lost in the match, which ended in him being taken directly to the hospital since his right orbital bone was fractured during the fight.
Out of a total of 46 fights the Mexican boxer has scored 38 wins, 27 by KOs, 7 loses and 1 no contest decision.
