Errol Spence Jr. apologizes to everyone as he had to back out from his bout against boxing legend Manny Pacquiao.
The two were supposed to meet in the ring on August 21, but Spence Jr. was recently found to have an eye injury that resulted in him withdrawing from the fight.
The Filipino boxer will instead fight Yordenis Ugas, who is Spences replacement. In this fight, the eight-division world champion will fight Ugas for his WBA welterweight championship. Their fight is set to happen on the original date, August 21, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Spence Jr. was supposed to defend his WBC and IBF belts against Pacquiao. However, it was found during a pre-fight examination that his left eyes retina is torn. Upon discovering his injury, Spence Jr. said that he was very disappointed as he was excited about fighting Manny Pacquiao.
The 42-year-old Manny Pacquiao is a boxing legend and a veteran, having fought 71 bouts throughout his career. His fight with Spence Jr. would have been fascinating as the younger fighter is undefeated among elite boxers. Moreover, Pacquiao was said not to have the same level of rigorous training as before.
According to him, he’s a seasoned boxer and so doesn’t need extensive preparation. But now, he will be fighting supposed undercard Ugas instead, who enters the biggest bout of his life. Pacquiao has agreed to fight Ugas and also asked everyone to pray for Spence Jr.’s complete recovery.
