Key – an area on the basketball court which is the painted rectangular free throw lane. It is bounded by the free throw line, foul lanes and the baseline. This area is also commonly known as the, “paint”. In the FIBA and NBA leagues, the key is 16 feet wide while in the NCAA; it is only 12 feet wide. Players of the offensive team are not allowed to remain in this area for more than 3 seconds. If they do so, there will be a violation called and they will loss possession of the ball.
