The Shanghai Sharks are a professional Chinese basketball team playing under the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). The team is situated in Shanghai, China. In China the team was well known by the name of Shanghai Dongfang Sharks. Now it is known by the name Shanghai Xiyang Sharks. The Chinese basketball Association was founded in 1995 and it includes 16 teams from China. The Shanghai is a well known basketball team outside China because of its famous trade of Yao Ming to the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was established in 1999.

From the year 1999 to the year 2002 the Shanghai Sharks have faced the Bayi Rockets in the CBA finals. The Sharks had the first two times they played with the Bayi Rockets. On the third try the Sharks managed to win the CBA title for the very first time in franchise history. Yao played a key role in their victory.

Since the 2002 season the Shanghai sharks haven’t made it to the CBA playoffs. They have had a very disappointing number of seasons till 2008.

In the current 2008 season the Shanghai Sharks are placed in the 9th place of the CBA regular season.
