Having graduated from the University of Notre Dame, he used to play basketball at the university level. During this period itself, he was selected by the New Jersey and was drafted in the 1978 NBA Draft. Later on, during the 1982-83 season, he played professional basketball for the Washington Bullets team. During the 1983-84 season, he played for the San Antonio Spurs team in the NBA for over 58 games.His jersey number is 40 and 45 respectively.

Prior to his draft with the New Jersey Nets team, he was traded by the Denver Nuggets in 1976 with a fourth round draft pick, Walter Jordan to the New York Nets for Ted McClain. In 1978, he was again drafted by the New Jersey Nets in the third round with 62nd pick of the NBA draft. In 1982, he got signed as a free agent with the Washington Bullets and by 1983; he was traded by the Washington Bullets to the San Antonio Spurs. However, by 1983, he was waived by the San Antonio Spurs team.
