In 2005, Jerebko decided to play at the University of Buffalo and even signed a letter of intent for a scholarship. However, he chose to play professionally instead of playing for college. In the 2006-07 season, he began his playing career at Boras Basket before moving to the Swedish Champions Plannja Basket. Jerebko won the 2006-07 Swedish Championships with the Plannja Basket team. The following year, he moved to Italy to play at Pallacanestro Biella.

Jerebko decided to declare for the 2008 NBA Draft but decided to withdraw stating that he required more experience at the highest level in Europe, before playing in the NBA. In 2009, for the NBA Draft, Jerebko was considered as one of the top-5 players to come in from Europe. Picked in the second round of the Draft, by the Detroit Pistons, Jerebko became the first player from Sweden to get picked for the NBA.
