Johannes Herber completed his education at West Virginia University in the US in 2006. He was called as Joe Herber while in the US. When he was in the University, he was a member of the German junior national team with whom he spent his summers. Along with this team, he competed in the 2005 World University Games. Further, during the 2006 World Championship, he was a member of the Germany national basketball team. In this championship, Germany progressed to the quarter finals, where it was beaten by Team USA. Herber took the opportunity to playing in 7 games and averaging 4.3 points per game in this championship.
